How to Rent a Car
Each car rental agency may have different rules, but here is some general information that may be helpful. First of all you need a valid driver’s license to rent a car. The car rental may not rent you a car if you have certain or too many violations on your license. Depending on the state you want to rent the car in and the type of rental office, the age that you can rent a car will vary. The usual age is over 25 years, if you can rent at a younger age you will probably have to pay a Young Renter’s Fee.
Most agencies will not guarantee you a certain car when you make a reservation, but will guarantee the size you request (compact, intermediate, full size, or SUV). Options such as car seats, hand controls and slider boards, ski racks and non-smoking cars may be available.
The agency will rent the car to one person. That person must pick up the car. You can have a second driver if the driver is a spouse, significant other, or co-worker, but you may have to pay an additional driver’s fee.
You will need a driver’s license and a credit card to rent the car. Occasionally a debit card can be used, but don’t be surprised if the agency calls for a credit report.
You will be offered insurance on the car usually called a loss damage waiver. This will pay for damage if you have an accident. This coverage is not mandatory, however, you will be responsible for any repairs. Check to see if your own auto insurance will cover any damage. Some credit card companies also provide this coverage. You will be offered other insurance policies, such as additional liability insurance, or medical insurance.
You can rent the car and return it to the same place or to another destination. Upon return of the car you will either need to fill the tank, or pay for the fuel they put in, and usually a refill fee.
If your travels include airfare or hotel, sometimes you can get a good deal by combining a package that includes all three. Prices on vacation packages and airline tickets can vary, so looking ahead can save you money. Purchase a package as far in advance as you can, but remember you can often still get a good last minute deal.
